OPERATE! Puts the People Behind the Press at Center Stage

The new Taktisphere Live! series launches with a practical conversation about curiosity, communication and why great digital embellishment begins long before anyone presses “start.”
Digital embellishment is usually marketed through the finished piece. The foil flashes. The varnish rises from the sheet. A designer runs a hand across the surface and immediately understands why print can still command attention.
But behind every dramatic unboxing and every show-stopping sample is a less visible reality: someone has to make the technology perform consistently, profitably and on deadline.
That person was the focus of OPERATE!, a new Taktisphere Live! program created for the operators who turn the promise of specialty print into production reality. Hosted by Taktiful founder Kevin Abergel and Eric Vessels, the debut episode introduced industry veteran Ken Huizenga as the series’ technical guide and made a compelling case that the operator is no longer simply the last person in the production chain. In a successful embellishment operation, the operator is connected to nearly every part of the business.
Huizenga brings an unusually broad perspective to that role. His career has spanned conventional offset, HP Indigo, toner, inkjet, fifth- and sixth-color production, finishing and digital embellishment. He was also an early adopter of MGI’s JetVarnish technology, buying one of the first systems during a period when operators and manufacturers were still discovering what these machines could really do.
The attraction was immediate. Customers wanted spot UV and foil without the dies, lengthy setup and outsourcing associated with conventional processes. Digital embellishment offered an answer, but early adoption also required relentless experimentation.
“I’m a tinkerer,” Huizenga said, describing the improvised testing and troubleshooting required to make unfamiliar applications work. That history is central to the premise of OPERATE!: give today’s operators a place to ask technical questions, compare experiences and learn without feeling that every issue must be escalated through an equipment manufacturer.
Curiosity Over Credentials
Asked what separates a good operator from a great one, Huizenga did not point first to press experience or technical mastery. His answer was one word: “curiosity.”
Technical skills can be taught, he argued. The more valuable instinct is the willingness to ask why a file behaves a certain way, what could make a result better and how the process might be changed before the next job reaches the press.
That matters because there is no single traditional background that guarantees success in embellishment. A prepress specialist may understand files but have little experience feeding difficult stocks. A press operator may know registration and color but be unfamiliar with clear dimensional varnish. Someone from bindery may handle paper beautifully yet need to learn digital editing. Even quality-control employees can become outstanding operators because they are already trained to notice defects and care deeply about the finished piece.
The best candidate, the panel suggested, is often the person who wants ownership of the machine and has the patience to explore its limits.
That ownership requires management support. Downtime should not automatically mean idle time. Operators need room to test artwork, compare foils, document settings and learn which combinations of substrate, heat, speed, pressure and varnish height produce reliable results.
“You don’t have any downtime when you’re an operator of an embellishment press,” Huizenga said. “You are tinkering and messing.”
Understanding the Variables
The debut episode moved quickly from philosophy into production detail. One major topic was substrate surface tension, commonly measured as dyne level. Huizenga identified roughly 40 to 42 dynes as a productive range for many applications. At the low end, varnish can absorb or spread before it is pinned. At the high end, it can bead like water on a nonstick pan.
A corona treatment unit can raise surface energy and make challenging sheets or lower-cost laminates more usable. Yet the larger lesson was not that one setting solves every problem. Operators can adjust corona treatment, varnish height, machine speed and pinning intensity, but they need time to test those variables before a deadline is bearing down on production.
Uncoated stocks present a related challenge because they behave like a sponge, allowing liquid varnish to disappear into the sheet. New papers engineered to retain an uncoated look while providing a printable surface are expanding the options. Other approaches include building a toner barrier beneath the varnish, using clear toner as a spot primer or applying a compatible coating first. The message throughout was consistent: know the material, test it early and save the recipe when it works.
Huizenga recommended keeping annotated samples that record speed, temperature, micron level, pressure and foil settings. Those sheets become a physical production database when a similar job returns weeks or months later. He also advised protecting a small library of finished samples for sales presentations, rather than allowing every successful piece to disappear into customer sample packs.
Production Does Not End at the Press
OPERATE! also addressed one of the most common downstream problems: cutting dimensional varnish without crushing, embossing or pulling the effect.
Freshly embellished sheets may be only partially cured beneath the surface, Huizenga explained, so giving work an overnight cure can dramatically improve finishing. Single-sheet cutting systems are ideal because they avoid clamping a tall stack of textured work. When a guillotine is necessary, operators should use small lifts, lower clamp pressure, place a foam pad beneath the clamp and cut with a sharp, less-used section of the blade.
Those details reinforce a bigger point. An embellishment operator must communicate backward to prepress and sales, forward to bindery and outward to customers. A varnish element crossing a crease, foil reaching a trim edge or an expensive substrate ordered too late can create problems that no press setting can fully rescue.
Bringing operators into the conversation early helps prevent those failures. It can also help close business. Huizenga recalled inviting designers to watch an embellished piece come off the machine, then noticing how long they held and explored it. The product became its own sales demonstration.
“For 10 minutes now, you have been intimate with a piece of printing,” he would tell them.
That tactile encounter, he said, made the value impossible to dismiss.
The first OPERATE! ultimately delivered more than a collection of pressroom tips. It challenged print businesses to reconsider where technical knowledge lives and how it moves through the organization. The machine may create the effect, but the operator connects design intent, material behavior, production discipline, finishing reality and customer value.
That is the real promise of the new series. Digital embellishment will continue to become faster and more automated, but extraordinary output still depends on trained, curious people who understand the process as a whole. OPERATE! is giving those people a stage, a community and a voice.
